    The Her-story of Handbags

Ask a woman to name the hardest-working item in her wardrobe, and she’ll answer in a snap. It isn’t pantyhose; one run, and they’re gone. It isn’t undies; those retreat to the clothes hamper at the end of every day. No, she’ll likely point to her Old Faithful, the item at her side every day, ensuring she’s always ready for the world: our her handbag.

A handbag represents so much more than a fashion accessory to its owner. It’s all about identity. Identity lives in its deepest recesses – driver’s license, cell phone, lipstick, iPod – but also on its exterior, which says “mom” if it’s a baby diaper bag; “savvy” if it’s a our designer handbag or designer purse; or “rising star” if it’s a discount designer handbag.

Now more than ever, women express their fashion identity with handbags. In fact, market researcher NDP Group reported in 2006 that women buy an average of three bags a year, up from one every two years in 2000, with more women using a new luxury handbag to update a wardrobe even if they can’t or don’t want to afford an entire luxury outfit.

The earliest purses were not born of luxury. They were strictly utilitarian, small sacks the ancients created to carry seeds and good-luck amulets. Egyptian hieroglyphs, as well, show pouches carried around the waist.

Purses existed in medieval Europe, when they were called “pockets” and were described in literature as sacks hung on the back by thongs. These pockets contained pomanders, or oranges scented with cloves; flint for starting a fire; and money – but they were used by men only. Soon women caught on, and the rest is history:

1400s: Purses for men and women become elaborate with gold, gems and embroidery, reflecting the owner’s prosperity.

1500s: The fashion of the day, according to paintings from the time, calls for flat bags tied by strings with tassels at the ends. By the end of the century, however, women prefer to keep their purses under their skirts.

1600s: Everyday materials storm the purse world, such as drawstring leather bags. About 1670, men give up handbags with the advent of pants with built-in pockets.

1700s: Handbags feature stitching so beautiful, they resemble portable artwork.

1800s: Pockets remain hot in fashion – even when dresses grow tighter as the century closes. However, as the century ends, women’s fashions grow so form-fitting that pockets become impractical wreckers of the sleek feminine form. Enter the large handbag, called a reticule, to transport items such as rouge, rice powder for the face, a fan, calling cards and smelling salts. The owner carries her reticule by long straps or chains, and owns various reticules for different occasions.

1900s: The term “handbag” comes into use, first applied to men’s hand-held luggage. By 1920, handbags have become an indispensable fashion item, complete with locks and inner compartments for opera glasses, makeup and fans. Jewelers even create a new item to carry in them: the leather wallet. Opulence goes on leave in the 1940s, when World War II means that metal frames, zippers, mirrors and even the leather handbag itself are in short supply; plastic and wood become the materials of choice. Then comes the rise of designer houses, including Chanel, Hermes and Louis Vuitton, in the 1950s. Both the advent of the name brand purse and a return to bohemian drawstring and shoulder bag styles occur in the 1960s. By the 1990s, a handbag comes to reflect worth and reward, in addition to fashion and practicality.

This brings us to the 21st century, where the handbag’s meaning is perhaps symbolized best by Martha Stewart’s Hermes Birkin bag. Birkins fetch from $6,600 to $50,000 or more and require buyers to sign up on a years-long wait-list, leading critics to pooh-pooh the bag as an ostentatious choice to bring to her trial. However, Stewart later tells Barbara Walters that she bought the $11,000 bag to reward herself after she became successful – much as any woman luxuriates in the success she owns or dresses to find.

What’s in the future for handbags? Fortune-tellers of fashion predict we’ll continue our love of color and texture, as you see reflected in the beautiful, radiant our Poesis designs and the up-to-the-minute discount designer bags, on these pages. For the moment, large purses rule, and women are expected to continue their three-new-bags-a-year pace through at least 2010.

This creates room for plenty of fashion statements: “It’s business,” “What are you doing after work?,” “Let’s play,” “Would you like to have dinner with me?” We hope you’ll find your personal statement here at Top Quality Purses – the our bag purse that becomes a favorite in your own history.
